A weed in the mustard family with alternate, elongated, triangular leaves. Initially forms a rosette of larger deeply lobed leaves, then stems grow to 2 to 3 ft. tall. Clusters of tiny yellow flowers top long, lax stems. Long, slender seed pods grow along main stem and when ripe split and drop small red seeds. Seeds germinate in fall to winter and buried seeds can survive ten years. Native to southern Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. Common in fields, orchards, and roadsides in the southwestern states where it outcompetes native plants.
