Trifolium repens

Weed Characteristics

Other Names: Dutch clover, ladino clover, honeysuckle clover, white trefoil

Leaf Type: Broadleaf

Flowers: White, pink

Leaves: Oval leaves with smooth edges; no hair

Life Cycle: Perennial

A low, creeping perennial plant with distinctive, compound leaves that have 3 same-sized, egg-shaped leaflets. Leaves often display faint, symmetrical white markings. White flowerheads rise above the foliage on leafless stems. Flowers produce seeds that can remain dormant in the soil for several years. Seeds germinate in spring and fall, rapidly grow, and spread via stolons above the soil, rooting at nodes, and forming 12" wide mats. Leaves on existing plants die back in winter and produce new leaves at the crown in spring. Prefers cool, moist soils. Native to Europe.
