6 of the Best New Perennial Flowers of 2020

2020 is bringing us a beautiful new array of perennial flowers! Here’s a look at 6 of the best new choices that’ll be showing up at garden centers this spring:

Spigelia ‘Little Redhead’

Commonly known as Indian pink, this native perennial is popular with those who enjoy wildflowers (although it can be somewhat hard to find).

‘Little Redhead’ is a newly named variety of the species, selected for its uniform growth and heavy bloom. It features upward-facing, tubular, red-yellow flowers in early summer, and grows about two feet fall, ideally in shade or part shade. It’s winter-hardy in USDA Zones 5-9.

Hibiscus Summerific® ‘Evening Rose’

This tropical-looking four-footer has the typical, large, eight-inch-wide, show-stopping mid-summer flowers of hibiscus. Summerific® ‘Evening Rose’ blooms best in full sun and is winter-hardy in USDA Zones 4-9.

These two new foxgloves are breakthroughs for their exceptionally long bloom times – all summer and even into early fall.

‘Arctic Fox Rose’ grows two feet tall and has flower spikes lined with tubular flowers that are pink around the edges and orange-salmon inside. ‘Pink Panther’ grows to just under two feet and has rosy-pink flower spikes. Both are winter-hardy in USDA Zones 5-9.

Coneflower Sombrero® Baja Burgundy

The whole 12-color Sombrero® series is shaping up as one of the longest-blooming, most compact, and overall best series of coneflowers.

Judges in the All-America Selections program (an independent non-profit that evaluates plants at dozens of nationwide trial sites) singled out Baja Burgundy as a 2020 national AAS award-winner for its winter-hardiness, sturdy branching, and heavy bloom.

Baja Burgundy blooms a vibrant red from mid-summer until frost. It grows about 20 inches tall, prefers full sun, attracts pollinators, and is winter-hardy in USDA Zones 4-9.

Geranium Azure Rush®

Hardy geranium Rozanne has been one of the best-selling perennials in the last 10 years for its long and heavy bloom of blue-purple flowers.

Azure Rush® is a new hardy geranium that performs similarly and blooms early summer into fall, except in a more compact package. It’s being dubbed “Rozanne’s smaller daughter” for its size of 18 inches tall and two feet wide. It grows in full sun to part shade in USDA Zones 5-8.

Anemone Fantasy™ ‘Belle’

Anemone (a.k.a. windflower) is an under-used late-summer perennial that traditionally produces white, daisy-like flowers on tall, wiry stems.

Fantasy™ ‘Belle’ is a compact new variety that grows 15 to 18 inches tall and produces double, deep-pink, wavy-edged flowers for weeks in August and September. It grows in full sun to part shade in USDA Zones 6-9.
