Start by removing any existing weeds around trees, shrubs, xeriscapes, and perennial beds.

Preen Extended Control Weed Preventer can be applied up to two times per year around established plants and transplants. A first application can be made any time throughout the growing season — spring, summer, or fall. For ongoing weed protection, a second seasonal application can be made two to six months after the first application.
When planting or transplanting into an area treated within the past 12 months, use fresh soil to fill in planting holes around plant roots, or injury may occur. Disturbing the soil surface after activation may result in erratic weed control.
Preen Extended Control Weed Preventer is not a weed killer – it stops new weeds from sprouting. First remove any existing weeds that may be growing. Then apply Preen Extended Control Weed Preventer using the easy-to-use bottle with flip-top applicator-cap. Sprinkle the product granules on top of the soil or mulch at the rate recommended on the label. Use a rake to work the granules into the top layer of soil or mulch. Then water the area where applied. Once the product is activated by watering, it forms an invisible weed control barrier in the top layer of soil (1-3 inches), preventing new weeds from germinating.
When used as directed, the product can be used around more than 600 listed perennials, groundcovers, shrubs, and trees. For the full list, see product label. To apply around established perennials, ground covers, shrubs, and trees: sprinkle Preen Extended Control Weed Preventer evenly over the entire soil surface, at the rate of .98 oz per 10 sq. ft. Use a rake to work the granules into the top layer, while being careful to keep the granules away from plant roots and foliage. Water as directed. Always brush off or wash off stray weed preventer granules from plant foliage to avoid leaf damage or discoloration.
For best weed control, we recommend applying Preen Extended Control Weed Preventer after spreading mulch on your perennial flower, shrub, and landscape beds. Sprinkle Preen on top of the mulch at the same rate as recommended for application directly to soil.
This product should not be used on flower seeds, lawns, vegetable gardens, or water gardens. It also is not for use around food-producing or edible plants, including herbs and fruit-bearing nut or fruit trees, or around a short list of plants that are sensitive to Preen Extended Control Weed Preventer (see list on label).
